Recent Publications by Foundation Alumni

“Neural Stem Cell Therapy and Rehabilitation in the Central Nervous System: Emerging Partnerships,” by Ross HH, Ambrosio F, Trumbower RD, Reier PJ, Behrman AL, and Wolf SL, was published in the May 2016 issue of Physical Therapy (2016;96:734–742). Heather H. Ross, MPT, PhD, was awarded the 2014 Foundation Research Grant. Fabrisia Ambrosio, MPT, PhD, was awarded a Foundation Research Grant in 2008. Andrea L. Behrman, PT, PhD, FAPTA, was awarded a Doctoral Training Research Grant (DTRG) in 1994 and a New Investigator Fellowship Training Initiative in 1998.

“Preliminary Evaluation of a Modified STarT Back Screening Tool Across Different Musculoskeletal Pain Conditions,” by Butera KA, Lentz TA, Beneciuk JM, and George SZ, was published online in Physical Therapy on February 4, 2016. Trevor A. Lentz, PT, MPT, CSCS, was awarded a Promotion of Doctoral Studies (PODS) I scholarship in 2015. Steven Z. George, PT, PhD, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 2000 and a PODS II scholarship in 2001.

“Ventilation and the Response to Hypercapnia After Morphine in Opioid-naive and Opioid-tolerant Rats,” by Emery MJ, Groves CC, Kruse TN, Shi C, and Terman GW, was published in Anesthesiology, The Journal of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, Inc (2016;124:945–957). Michael J. Emery, PT, EdD, FAPTA, was awarded a 1985 DTRG.

“High Flow Nasal Heliox Improves Work of Breathing and Attenuates Lung Injury in a Newborn Porcine Lung Injury Model,” by Jassar RK, Vellanki H, Zhu Y, Hesek AM, Wang J, Rodriguez E, Wolfson MR, and Shaffer TH, was published in the Journal of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine (2015;8:323–331). Marla R. Wolfson, PT, PhD, was awarded a DTRG in 1987.

“The Effectiveness of Mechanical Traction Among Subgroups of Patients With Low Back and Leg Pain: A Randomized Trial,” by Thackeray A, Fritz JM, Childs JD, and Brennan GP, was published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy (2016;46:144–154). Julie Mae Fritz, PT, PhD, ATC, was awarded an Orthopaedic Research Grant in 2002. John D. Childs, PT, PhD, OCS, FAAOMPT, MBA, FAPTA, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 2001 and the 2004 Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge Research Grant.

“Immediate Effect of Active Abdominal Contraction on Inter-Recti Distance,” by Chiarello CM, McAuley JA, and Hartigan EH, was published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy on January 26, 2016. Cynthia M. Chiarello, PT, PhD, was awarded a DTRG in 1990 and 1991. Erin H. Hartigan, PT, PhD, ATC, was awarded PODS I scholarships in 2006 and 2007 and a PODS II scholarship in 2008.

Join the Scientific Review Committee

The Foundation is accepting nominations and CVs of those interested in serving on the Scientific Review Committee (SRC). This elite group of professionals is the peer-review arm of the Foundation's scholarship, fellowship, and grant program. Members of the SRC should have significant experience in the training of predoctoral and postdoctoral students and in mentoring emerging investigators, possess a strong track record of extramural funding, and have peer-review experience at the federal level. Terms are for a 3-year period beginning in January 2017. CVs must be received by August 1, 2016 in order to be considered.

Current Funding Opportunities

Applications for the Florence Kendall Scholarship and Research Grant programs are currently being accepted. Students beginning their postprofessional doctoral programs are encouraged to apply for a $5,000 Kendall Scholarship.

Research grants available for funding this year include: Foundation Research Grant, Geriatric Research Grant, Pediatric Research Grant, Orthopaedic Research Grant, Magistro Family Foundation Research Grant, and, new this year, the Moffat Geriatric Research Grant.

The Magistro Family Foundation Research Grant requires potential applicants to submit a Letter of Intent to Apply, and the deadline to do so has passed. A Letter of Intent to Apply is NOT required for all other research grants.

Please visit the Foundation's website for complete and up-to-date guidelines, eligibility, and instructions before applying for any of the Foundation funding mechanisms. Full applications for all funding mechanisms must be submitted to the Foundation by noon, ET, August 3, 2016.

Foundation Shoutouts

Bernadette Gillick's Pediatric Research Lab at the University of Minnesota has recently been awarded the Cerebral Palsy Alliance AACPDM STEPember Grant and the AHC Seed Grant for the study titled: “Perinatal Stroke: Understanding Brain Reorganization Through Infant Neuroexcitability and Neuroimaging.” Dr. Gillick is the recipient of PODS II scholarships in 2009 and 2010 and the 2014 Magistro Family Foundation Research Grant.

Jill Heathcock, Ohio State University Assistant Professor at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, was named Principal Investigator of an NIH R01 research study titled, “Daily and Weekly Rehabilitation Delivery for Young Children with Cerebral Palsy.” Dr. Heathcock was the recipient of the 2001 Mary McMillan Doctoral Scholarship, the 2002 and 2003 PODS I, the 2004 and 2005 PODS II, the 2009 Pediatric Research Grant, and the 2011 Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge Research Grant.
