Recent Publications by Foundation-Funded Researchers
“Effects of Locomotor Exercise Intensity on Gait Performance in Individuals With Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury,” by Leech KA, Kinnaird CR, Holleran CL, Kahn J, and Hornby TG, was published ahead of print in Physical Therapy on June 16, 2016. Kristan A. Leech, PT, DPT, PhD, was awarded a Florence P. Kendall Doctoral Scholarship in 2010, a Promotion of Doctoral Studies (PODS) I scholarship in 2012, and PODS II scholarships 2013 and 2014.
“Infants Born Preterm Have Delayed Development of Adaptive Postural Control in the First 5 Months of Life,” by Dusing SC, Thacker LR, and Galloway JC, was published in the August 2016 issue Infant Behavior and Development (2016;44:49–58). Stacey C. Dusing, PT, PhD, was awarded a 2002 Mary McMillan Doctoral Scholarship, a 2005 PODS II scholarship, and the 2013 Pediatric Research Grant.
“The Effect of Velocity of Joint Mobilization on Corticospinal Excitability in Individuals With a History of Ankle Sprain,” by Fisher BE, Piraino A, Lee YY, Smith JA, Johnson S, Davenport TE, and Kulig K, was published in the July issue of Journal of Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy (2016;46:562–570). Beth E. Fisher, PT, PhD, was awarded a 1997 Doctoral Training Research Grant (DTRG), a 1998 PODS II scholarship, and the 2008 Magistro Family Research Grant. Jo Armour Smith, PT, PhD, was awarded a 2009 Kendall Doctoral Scholarship.
“Men and Women Demonstrate Differences in Early Functional Recovery After Total Knee Arthroplasty,” by Gustavson AM, Wolfe P, Falvey JR, Eckhoff DG, Toth MJ, and Stevens-Lapsley JE, was published in the July issue of Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (2016;97:1154–1162). Allison M. Gustavson, PT, DPT, was awarded a Kendall Scholarship in 2014 and PODS I scholarships in 2015 and 2016. Jason R. Falvey, PT, DPT, was awarded a Kendall Scholarship in 2014 and PODS I scholarships in 2015 and 2016. Jennifer E. Stevens-Lapsley, PT, PhD, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 2000, a PODS II scholarship in 2001, and the 2007 Pittsburgh-Marquette Research Grant.
“Coordination of Muscles to Control the Footpath During Over-Ground Walking in Neurologically Intact Individuals and Stroke Survivors,” by Srivastava S, Kao PC, Reisman DS, Higginson JS, and Scholz JP, was published in the July issue of Experimental Brain Research (2016;234:1903–1914). Darcy S. Reisman, PT, PhD, was awarded a 1999 Mary McMillan Doctoral Scholarship. John P. Scholz, PT, PhD, was awarded DTRGs in 1980, 1989, 1991, and 1992.

Alumni Shoutouts
Katherine Rudolph, PT, PhD, associate professor at the University of New England, received a $400,000 NIH grant to investigate the relationship between pain processing and motor adaptation in people with knee osteoarthritis. Rudolph was awarded a DTRG in 1997. She also served on the Scientific Review Committee for 7 years from 2006–2012, with the last 3 as chair. Catherine Lang, PT, PhD, Professor of Physical Therapy at Washington University in St. Louis, has accepted an invitation to serve a 2-year term as the chairperson of the Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Sciences Study Section, Center for Scientific Review, administered through the NIH. Lang was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 1999 and a PODS II scholarship in 2000.
William Thompson, PT, DPT, and Keith Avin, PT, DPT, from the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis were awarded 2 NIH grants totaling more than $1 million to study the effects of exercise on health conditions affecting millions of Americans. Thompson was awarded a 2007 Kendall Scholarship and PODS II scholarships in 2009 and 2010. Avin was awarded a 2008 Kendall Scholarship, a PODS I scholarship in 2009, and a PODS II scholarship in 2010.
