Alumni in the News
A recent study led by Julie Fritz, PT, PhD, FAPTA (2002 Orthopaedic Research Grant), examining the cost-effectiveness of physical therapy for low back pain compared with MRI, was featured on the Washington Post website. Read more at: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2015/03/27/oh-my-aching-wallet-mri-instead-of-physical-therapy-for-low-back-pain-leads-to-4793-higher-price/.
A University of Florida news release featured Steven George, PT, PhD (2000 PODS I, 2001 PODS II), and his study, which found that—when determining the patients who will have long-lasting pain after shoulder surgery—coping style and genetic predisposition may be bigger factors than previously thought. A study led by Anthony Delitto, PT, PhD, FAPTA (1997 Clinical Research Center) and published in the Annals of Internal Medicine was highlighted on the Daily Mail website. The study examines physical therapy versus surgery for chronic low back pain and finds that exercise rehabilitation may work just as well as surgery. Current Funding Opportunities
Applications for the Kendall Scholarship and Research Grant programs are currently being accepted. Students beginning their postprofessional doctoral programs are encouraged to apply for a $5,000 Kendall Scholarship. The Section on Women's Health is pleased to sponsor a Kendall Scholarship for an applicant wishing to focus his or her studies on women's health physical therapy.
Research grants available for funding this year include: the Foundation Research Grant, the Geriatric Research Grant, the Private Practice Research Grant, and the Magistro Family Foundation Research Grant. Please note that the Magistro Family Foundation Research Grant and the Private Practice Section Research Grant must have submitted a letter of intent by June 1, 2015, in order to apply. Potential applicants will then be invited to submit a full application. A Letter of Intent to Apply is not required for the Foundation Research Grant or the Geriatric Research Grant.
Please visit the Foundation's website for complete and up-to-date guidelines, eligibility, and instructions before applying for any of the Foundation funding mechanisms. Full applications for all funding mechanisms must be submitted to the Foundation by Wednesday, August 5, 12:00 pm, noon (ET).
New Online Application System
The Foundation has upgraded its online application system and application format. Before you begin your funding application, it is important that you thoroughly read all instructions and funding mechanism deadlines. Applicants are encouraged to start the submission process early to allow for potential questions to be answered.
CoHSTAR Visiting Scientist Program
The multisite Center on Health Services Training and Research (CoHSTAR) is accepting applications for the Visiting Scientist Program. This program enables “visiting” physical therapist researchers to work with faculty mentors across the 3 collaborating institutions—Brown University, Boston University, and University of Pittsburgh—and provides opportunities for hands-on experience with investigators. This in-depth opportunity for collaboration may be combined, when appropriate, with the implementation of a CoHSTAR-funded pilot study or the development and implementation of a health services research study funded from other sources. CoHSTAR will provide support of up to $20,000 for a visiting scientist to cover a stipend, and/or defray travel and living expenses. To learn more about CoHSTAR and the Visiting Scientist Program, visit the Foundation's website (http://www.foundation4pt.org/explore-our-impact/center-of-excellence/), or contact Linda_Resnik{at}brown.edu with specific questions about applying.
