Recent Publications by Foundation Alumni
“Restricting State Part C Eligibility Policy Is Associated With Lower Early Intervention Utilization,” by McManus BM, Magnusson D, and Rosenberg S, was published in The Maternal and Child Health Journal (2014;18:1031–1037). Beth M. McManus, PT, ScD, was awarded a Mary McMillan Doctoral Scholarship in 2004, a Promotion of Doctoral Studies (PODS) I Scholarship in 2005, a PODS II Scholarship in 2008, and a New Investigator Fellowship Training Initiative (NIFTI) in 2013. Dawn Magnusson, PT, MPT, PhD, was awarded a PODS II Scholarship in 2013. The contributions of McManus and Magnusson to this research were supported in part by the Foundation.
“Role of Body-Worn Movement Monitor Technology for Balance and Gait Rehabilitation,” by Horak F, King L, and Mancini M, was published in the March 2015 issue of Physical Therapy (2015;95:461–470). Fay Horak, PT, PhD, was awarded a Doctoral Training Research Grant (DTRG) in 1989. Laurie King, PT, PhD, was awarded a Clagett Family Research Grant in 2011.
“Investigating the Validity of the Environmental Framework Underlying the Original and Modified Dynamic Gait Index,” by Shumway-Cook A, Matsuda PN, and Taylor C, was published online in Physical Therapy on December 18, 2014. Anne Shumway-Cook, PT, PhD, FAPTA, was awarded DTRGs in 1980, 1995, and 1996.
“Quantitative Measures of Sagittal Plane Head-Neck Control: A Test-Retest Reliability Study,” by Popovich JM Jr, Reeves NP, Priess MC, Cholewicki J, Choi J, and Radcliffe CJ, was published in the Journal of Biomechanics (2015;48:549–554). John M. Popovich Jr, PT, DPT, PhD, was awarded PODS I Scholarships in 2005 and 2007 and a PODS II Scholarship in 2008.
New Online Application System and Current Funding Opportunities
The Foundation has upgraded its online application system and application structure. Potential applicants should read all guidelines and instructions before assembling their applications.
Applications for the Kendall Scholarship and Research Grant programs are currently being accepted. Students beginning their postprofessional doctoral programs are encouraged to apply for a $5,000 Kendall Scholarship. For new and emerging investigators, Foundation Research Grants are available for either 1- or 2-year projects.
Magistro Family Research Grant applicants may be required to submit a letter of intent to apply within a set deadline—please visit the Foundation's website for complete and up-to-date instructions before applying for the Magistro Family Research Grant as well as all other Foundation funding opportunities.
Applications for Research Grants and Kendall Scholarship opportunities are due Wednesday, August 5, 2015, at noon, ET. Application guidelines and instructions may be found at http://www.foundation4pt.org/apply-for-funding.
CoHSTAR Fellowship Training Opportunities
The multisite Center on Health Services Training and Research (CoHSTAR) continues to accept applications for fellowship training opportunities in health services/health policy research. Potential trainees can be paired with an experienced mentor team from Brown University, the University of Pittsburgh, or Boston University and have access to activities and courses from 26 graduate programs spanning the 3 institutions. Thanks to Neva Kirk-Sanchez, PT, PhD, and Elsa Drevyn, PT, DPT (University of Miami) for their support as their students assumed leadership of this year's Challenge. Winning schools and the grand total raised by the Challenge will be listed on the Foundation's website after the 2015 Foundation Gala.

The Foundation for Physical Therapy is currently accepting nominations to serve on the Scientific Review Committee. This all-volunteer committee is the cornerstone for the award of more than 20 scholarships, fellowships, and grants each year. Foundation Shout Outs
Foundation alumnus Anthony Delitto, PT, PhD, FAPTA (1997 Clinical Research Center grant), was recently awarded a $13.9 million grant from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to fund his study, “Targeted Interventions to Prevent Chronic Low Back Pain in High Risk Patients: A Multi-Site Pragmatic RCT.”
Foundation alumna and former Scientific Review Committee member Pamela Duncan, PT, PhD, FAPTA, also was awarded a $14 million PCORI Grant for her study, “Early Supported Discharge for Improving Functional Outcomes After Stroke.”
Foundation alumni Beth Smith, PT, DPT, PhD (2011 NIFTI), and Fay Horak, PT, PhD (1989 DTRG), were recently awarded the APTA Neurology Section's 2014 Golden Synapse Award for the most outstanding article published in the Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy in 2014. The article was based on research supported by Smith's 2011 New Investigator Fellowship Training Initiative from the Foundation.
Foundation alumna and trustee Edelle Field-Fote, PT, PhD, FAPTA (1994 DTRG), was recently awarded the APTA Neurology Section's Excellence in Research Award, which acknowledges and honors a member of the Neurology Section who demonstrates continuing excellence in research related to neurologic physical therapy science, theory, practice, or education.
Foundation alumna Nora Fritz, PT, DPT, NCS (2010 Kendall Scholarship), recently received the APTA Neurology Section's PT Post-Professional Level Research Award. The topic of her research is “Interhemispheric Supplemental Motor Area Tract–Specific Measures Are Associated With Dual-Task Walking Variability in Multiple Sclerosis.”
Foundation alumnus Mark Rogers, PT, PhD, FAPTA (1983, 1989 DTRG), was recently appointed chair of the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science at the University of Maryland.
Foundation alumni Pierce Boyne, PT, DPT, NCS (2014 PODS I), and Kari Dunning, PT, PhD (2012 Magistro Family Foundation Research Grant), were recently featured in an article on the University of Cincinnati's Health News website discussing their research focusing on high-intensity interval training for patients with chronic stroke.
