“Toward Understanding Ambulatory Activity Decline in Parkinson Disease,” by Cavanaugh JT, Ellis TD, Earhart GM, Ford MP, Foreman KB, and Dibble LE, was published in Physical Therapy (2015;95:1142–1150). James T. Cavanaugh, PT, PhD, NCS, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 2001. Gammon M. Earhart, PT, PhD, was awarded a PODS II scholarship in 1999. Leland E. Dibble, PT, PhD, ATC, was awarded a Geriatric Research Grant in 2004.
“Pain Response After Maximal Aerobic Exercise in Adolescents Across Weight Status,” by Stolzman S, Danduran M, Hunter SK, and Bement MH, was published online in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise on April 8, 2015. Stacy Stolzman, PT, MPT, was awarded a Promotion of Doctoral Studies (PODS) I scholarship in 2013 and a PODS II scholarship in 2014. Marie Hoeger Bement, PT, PhD, was awarded a Mary McMillan Doctoral Scholarship in 2000. Stolzman's contribution to this research was supported in part by the Foundation.
“Remote Limb Ischemic Conditioning Enhances Motor Learning in Healthy Humans,” by Cherry-Allen KM, Gidday JM, Lee J-M, Hershey T, and Lang CE, was published in the Journal of Neurophysiology (2015;113:3708–3719). Kendra M. Cherry-Allen, PT, DPT, was awarded a Florence P. Kendall Doctoral Scholarship in 2012, PODS I scholarships in 2013 and 2014, and a PODS II scholarship in 2015. Catherine E. Lang, PT, PhD, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 1999 and a PODS II scholarship in 2000. Cherry-Allen's contribution to this research was supported in part by the Foundation.
“Validity and Comprehensibility of Physical Activity Scales for Children With Sport Injuries,” by Iversen MD, von Heideken J, Farmer E, Rihm J, Heyworth BE, and Kocher MS, was published online in the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics on March 3, 2015. Maura Daly Iversen, PT, DPT, MPH, ScD, was awarded a Foundation Research Grant in 2000.
“Surgery Versus Nonsurgical Treatment of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: A Randomized Trial,” by Delitto A, Piva SR, Moore CG, Fritz JM, Wisniewski SR, Josbeno DA, Fye M, and Welch WC, was published in Annals of Internal Medicine (2015;162:465–473). Anthony Delitto, PT, PhD, FAPTA, was awarded a Clinical Research Center Grant in 1997. Julie M. Fritz, PT, PhD, FAPTA, was awarded an Orthopaedic Research Grant in 2002.
“Painful Intercourse Is Significantly Associated With Evoked Pain Perception and Cognitive Aspects of Pain in Women With Pelvic Pain,” by Alappattu MJ, George SZ, Robinson ME, Fillingim RB, Moawad N, LeBrun EW, and Bishop MD, was published in Sexual Medicine (2015;3:14–23). Meryl J. Alappattu, PT, DPT, PhD, was awarded a Florence P. Kendall Doctoral Scholarship in 2008, PODS I scholarships in 2010 and 2011, and a PODS II scholarship in 2012. Steven Z. George, PT, PhD, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 2000 and a PODS II scholarship in 2001.
“Altered Gait Characteristics in Individuals With Knee Osteoarthritis and Self-Reported Knee Instability,” by Farrokhi S, O'Connell M, Gil AB, Sparto PJ, and Fitzgerald GK, was published in The Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy (2015;45:351–359). Shawn Farrokhi, PT, DPT, PhD, was awarded PODS I scholarships in 2005 and 2006 and PODS II scholarships in 2008 and 2009. G. Kelley Fitzgerald, PT, PhD, FAPTA, was awarded Doctoral Training Research Grants in 1995 and 1997 and a Sports Physical Therapy Research Grant in 2000.
“Exciting Recovery: Augmenting Practice With Stimulation to Optimize Outcomes After Spinal Cord Injury,” by Field-Fote EC, was published in Progress in Brain Research (2015;218:103–126). Edelle C. Field-Fote, PT, PhD, FAPTA, was awarded a Doctoral Training Research Grant in 1994.
“Clinical Significance of Pain at Hospital Discharge Following Traumatic Orthopaedic Injury: General Health, Depression, and PTSD Outcomes at 1 Year,” by Archer KR, Heins SE, Abraham CM, Obremskey WT, Wegener ST, and Castillo RC, was published online in The Clinical Journal of Pain on April 15, 2015. Kristin R. Archer, PT, DPT, PhD, was awarded a Magistro Family Foundation Research Grant in 2011.

2015–2016 Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge Underway
The 28th annual Challenge officially launched at NSC 2015. All physical therapist and physical therapist assistant programs are encouraged to join the 235 schools that have already raised more than $3 million for physical therapy research to participate in this year's effort. All contributions to the Challenge are used by the Foundation to award a research grant and a PODS scholarship to deserving researchers. For more information, visit http://foundation4pt.org.
Now Accepting Applications
The Foundation is once again accepting applications for the PODS scholarship and the New Investigator Fellowship Training Initiative (NIFTI). Potential applicants should visit the Foundation's website and review all guidelines and instructions before beginning an application. Applications and any related materials must be submitted via the Foundation's online application system by January 20, 2016, 12:00 pm, noon, Eastern time.
Congratulations
The winners of the American Physical Therapy Association's (APTA) 2015 Emerging Leaders awards were recently announced. This is a program that recognizes physical therapists and physical therapist assistants from APTA components for their roles as up-and-coming leaders who have demonstrated extraordinary service early in their careers. This year's list includes Foundation alumni Sarah Gilliland, PT, DPT, PhD, CSCS (2011, 2012 PODS I, 2014 PODS II), and Meryl Alappattu, PT, DPT, PhD (2008 Kendall Doctoral Scholarship; 2010, 2011 PODS I; 2012 PODS II).
Foundation alumna Kristan Leech, PT, DPT, PhD (2010 Kendall Doctoral Scholarship; 2012 PODS I; 2013, 2014 PODS II), completed her PhD at Northwestern University and began a postdoctoral fellowship at The Johns Hopkins University/Kennedy Krieger Institute under the mentorship of fellow Foundation alumna Amy Bastian, PT, PhD (1994, 1995 Doctoral Training Research Grant).
