“Predicting Functional Performance and Range of Motion Outcomes After Total Knee Arthroplasty,” by Bade MJ, Kittelson JM, Kohrt WM, and Stevens-Lapsley JE, was published online in the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation on February 6, 2014. Michael J. Bade, PT, PhD, FAAOMPT, was awarded a Florence P. Kendall Doctoral Scholarship in 2008, a Promotion of Doctoral Studies (PODS) I scholarship in 2010, and a PODS II scholarship in 2011. Jennifer E. Stevens-Lapsley, PT, MPT, PhD, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 2000, a PODS II scholarship in 2001, and a Marquette Challenge Research Grant in 2007. Bade's contributions to this research were supported in part by the Foundation.
“Modulation of Intracortical Inhibition in Response to Acute Psychosocial Stress Is Impaired Among Individuals With Chronic Neck Pain,” by Marker RJ, Stephenson JL, Kluger BM, Curran-Everett D, and Maluf KS, was published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research (2014;76:249–256). Ryan J. Marker, PT, DPT, was awarded a Florence P. Kendall Doctoral Scholarship in 2011 and a PODS I scholarship in 2013. Katrina S. Maluf, PT, PhD, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 1000, a PODS II scholarship in 2001, and a Magistro Family Foundation Research Grant in 2007. Marker's contributions to this research were supported in part by the Foundation.
“Associations Between Physical Therapy and Long-Term Outcomes for Individuals With Lumbar Spinal Stenosis in the SPORT Study,” by Fritz JM, Lurie JD, Zhao W, Whitman JM, Delitto A, Brennan GP, and Weinstein JN, was published online in The Spine Journal on October 23, 2013. Julie M. Fritz, PT, PhD, FAPTA, was awarded an Orthopaedic Research Grant in 2002. Anthony Delitto, PT, PhD, FAPTA, was awarded a Clinical Research Center grant in 1997.
“Assessment of Strength, Flexibility, and Running Mechanics in Males With Iliotibial Band Syndrome,” by Noehren B, Schmitz A, Hempel R, Westlake C, and Black W, was published in The Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy (2014;44:217–222). Brian Noehren, PT, MSPT, PhD, was awarded PODS I scholarships in 2006 and 2007 and a PODS II scholarship in 2008.
“Lower Extremity Dexterity Is Associated With Agility in Adolescent Soccer Athletes,” by Lyle MA, Valero-Cuevas FJ, Gregor RJ, and Powers CM, was published online in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports on December 11, 2013. Mark A. Lyle, PT, PhD, OCS, was awarded PODS I scholarships in 2007 and 2008 and a PODS II scholarship in 2010. Christopher M. Powers, PT, PhD, FAPTA, was awarded a Doctoral Training Research Grant in 1993 and a Marquette Challenge Research Grant in 2001.
“Biopsychosocial Influence on Exercise-Induced Injury: Genetic and Psychological Combinations are Predictive of Shoulder Pain Phenotypes,” by George SZ, Parr JJ, Wallace MR, Wu SS, Borsa PA, Dai Y, and Fillingim RB, was published in The Journal of Pain (2014;15:68–80). Steven Z. George, PT, PhD, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 2000 and a PODS II scholarship in 2001.
“Companion Confidence in the Balance of Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Implications for Physical Activity Promotion,” by Cavanaugh JT, Dunfey JC, and Wyand MK, was published online in the Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy on January 8, 2014. James T. Cavanaugh, PT, PhD, NCS, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 2001.
“Relationship Between Cognition and Gait Performance in Older Adults Receiving Physical Therapy Interventions in the Home,” by Whitney SL, Marchetti GF, Ellis J, Otis L, Asiri F, and Alghadir A, was published in the Journal of Rehabilitation and Research Development (2013;50:1089–1098). Susan L. Whitney, PT, DPT, PhD, ATC, FAPTA, was awarded a Doctoral Training Research Grant in 1989.
“Child Engagement in Daily Life: A Measure of Participation for Young Children With Cerebral Palsy,” by Chiarello LA, Palisano RJ, McCoy SW, Bartlett DJ, Wood A, Chang HJ, Kang LJ, and Avery L, was published online in Disability and Rehabilitation on January 28, 2014. Lisa A. Chiarello, PT, PhD, PCS, FAPTA, was awarded a Doctoral Training Research Grant in 1990. Robert J. Palisano, PT, ScD, FAPTA, was awarded a Doctoral Training Research Grant in 1984.
“Concept Analysis of the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS®) and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF),” by Tucker CA, Cieza A, Riley AW, Stucki G, Lai JS, Bedirhan Ustun T, Kostanjsek N, Riley W, Cella D, and Forrest CB, was published online in Quality of Life Research on February 6, 2014. Carole A. Tucker, PT, PhD, PCS, was awarded Doctoral Training Research Grants in 1995 and 1996.
Current Funding Opportunities
The Foundation is now accepting applications for the Kendall Scholarship and Research Grant programs. Students beginning their post-professional doctoral programs are encouraged to apply for a $5,000 Kendall Scholarship. New Funding Opportunities for 2014
The Magistro Family Foundation Research Grant is now offering emerging investigators $80,000 for 1- or 2-year projects.
The Orthopaedic Section Research Grant is being offered for emerging investigators exploring clinical outcomes of physical therapist practice for patients with musculoskeletal conditions. This grant will provide $40,000 for either 1-or 2-year projects.
Be sure to review all guidelines and instructions carefully before beginning an application.

Foundation Alumni in the News
Fabrisia Ambrosio, PT, PhD (2008 Foundation Research Grant), is involved in an innovative line of research featured on the Advancing Science, Serving Society website and other media outlets looking at regrowing muscle in men's injured legs. Ambrosio and her colleagues were able to successfully regenerate damaged leg muscles through a new stem cell technique using material from pig bladder tissue. Read more at http://bit.ly/1s0kiKa.
