Kendra M. Cherry-Allen, PT, DPT, was awarded a Florence P. Kendall Doctoral Scholarship in 2012 and Promotion of Doctoral Studies (PODS) I scholarships in 2013 and 2014. Catherine E. Lang, PT, PhD, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 1999 and a PODS II scholarship in 2000. Cherry-Allen's contributions to this research were supported in part by the Foundation.
“Reliability of Ultrasound Imaging for the Assessment of Lumbar Multifidi Thickness in Older Adults With Chronic Low Back Pain,” by Sions JM, Velasco TO, Teyhen DS, and Hicks GE, was published online in the Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy on April 16, 2014. Jaclyn M. Sions, PT, DPT, PhD, OCS, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 2010 and a PODS II scholarship in 2011. Sions' contributions to this research were supported in part by the Foundation.
“Novel Approaches to Objectively Assess Shoulder Function,” by Hurd WJ, Morrow MM, Miller EJ, Adams RA, Sperling JW, and Kaufman KR, was published online in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery on March 20, 2014. Wendy J. Hurd, PT, PhD, SCS, was awarded a Mary McMillan Doctoral Scholarship in 2002, a PODS I scholarship in 2004, and a PODS II scholarship in 2006.
“Reliability and Diagnostic Accuracy of Clinical Tests of Vestibular Function for Children,” by Christy JB, Payne J, Azuero A, and Formby C, was published in Pediatric Physical Therapy (2014;26:180–189). Jennifer B. Christy, PT, PhD, was awarded a Mary McMillan Doctoral Scholarship in 2001 and a PODS I scholarship in 2002.
“Four Square Step Test in Ambulant Persons With Multiple Sclerosis: Validity, Reliability, and Responsiveness,” by Wagner JM, Norris RA, Van Dillen LR, Thomas FP, and Naismith RT, was published in the International Journal of Rehabilitation Research (2013;36:253–259). Joanne M. Wagner, PT, PhD, was awarded PODS II scholarships in 2004 and 2005. Linda R. Van Dillen, PT, PhD, was awarded a Doctoral Training Research Grant in 1992.
“The Relationship Between Spatiotemporal Gait Asymmetry and Balance in Individuals With Chronic Stroke,” by Lewek MD, Bradley CE, Wutzke CJ, and Zinder SM, was published in the Journal of Applied Biomechanics (2014;30:31–36). Michael D. Lewek, PT, PhD, was awarded a PODS II scholarship in 2002 and a Geriatric Research Grant in 2009.
“Control of Reach Extent With the Paretic and Nonparetic Arms after Unilateral Sensorimotor Stroke: Kinematic Differences Based on Side of Brain Damage,” by Stewart JC, Gordon J, and Winstein CJ, was published in Experimental Brain Research (2014;232:2407–2419). Jill C. Stewart, PT, PhD, was awarded a Mary McMillan Doctoral Scholarship in 2003 and PODS II scholarships in 2008 and 2009. Carolee J. Winstein, PT, PhD, FAPTA, was awarded Doctoral Training Research Grants in 1986 and 1993 and a Clinical Research Network Grant in 2002.
“Life-Space Assessment and Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly: Validity of Proxy Informant Responses,” by Cavanaugh JT and Crawford K, was published in Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (2014;95:1527–1532). James Cavanaugh, PT, PhD, NCS, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 2001.
“Identification of Dynapenia in Older Adults Through the Use of Grip Strength T-Scores,” by Bohannon RW and Magasi S, was published online in Muscle & Nerve on April 12, 2014. Richard W. Bohannon, PT, DPT, EdD, NCS, FAPTA, was awarded a Doctoral Training Research Grant in 1985.
“Relationship of the Functional Movement Screen In-Line Lunge to Power, Speed, and Balance Measures,” by Hartigan EH, Lawrence M, Bisson BM, Torgerson E, and Knight RC, was published in Sports Health (2014;6:197–202). Erin Hartigan, PT, DPT, PhD, OCS, ATC, was awarded PODS I scholarships in 2006 and 2007 and a PODS II scholarship in 2008.
“AM-PAC ‘6-Clicks’ Functional Assessment Scores Predict Acute Hospital Discharge Destination,” by Jette DU, Stilphen M, Ranganathan VK, Passek SD, Frost FS, and Jette AM, was published in Physical Therapy (2014;94:1252–1261). Diane U. Jette, PT, DSc, FAPTA, was awarded a Doctoral Training Research Grant in 1991.
“Intramuscular Fat and Inflammation Differ in Older Adults: The Impact of Frailty and Inactivity,” by Addison O, Drummond MJ, LaStayo PC, Dibble LE, Wende AR, McClain DA, and Marcus RL, was published in The Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging (2014;18:532–538). Odessa Addison, PT, DPT, PhD, was awarded a Florence P. Kendall Doctoral Scholarship in 2008. Paul C. LaStayo, PT, PhD, CHT, was awarded a PODS II scholarship in 1999 and a New Investigator Fellowship Training Initiative (NIFTI) in 2000. Leland Dibble, PT, PhD, ATC, was awarded a Geriatric Research Grant in 2004.
Congratulations and Kudos
Scientific Review Committee chair Gregory Hicks, PT, PhD, was recently named as the new chair of the University of Delaware Physical Therapy Department.
Ericka Merriwether, PT, PhD (2009, 2010 PODS I, 2012 PODS II), recently completed her PhD in movement science at Washington University in St. Louis and began a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Iowa under the mentorship of Kathleen Sluka, PT, PhD, FAPTA.
Kristin Archer, PT, DPT, PhD (2011 Magistro), recently had an abstract selected as a nominee for “Best Paper” at the North American Spine Society annual meeting. The research featured in Archer's abstract was funded by her 2011 Magistro Family Foundation Research Grant from the Foundation.
Dawn Magnusson, PT, MPT, PhD (2013 PODS II), recently completed her PhD in population health sciences at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and has accepted a postdoctoral fellowship position at Johns Hopkins University in the Department of Pediatrics.
Noelle G. Moreau, PT, PhD (2002 McMillan) and Kristie Bjornson, PT, PhD, were awarded a 2-year R21 grant from the NIH's Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) in August 2014 for their collaborative project utilizing the multiple-PI model. The award of $425,129 is in support of the project “Muscle Performance and Walking in Cerebral Palsy: Short-Burst Interval Treadmill Training.” Amy Bodkin, PT, PhD, from the University of Colorado–Denver, also is part of the development team and serves as a consultant on the project.

2014–2015 Miami–Marquette Challenge Underway
The 27th annual Challenge officially launched at NSC 2014. We encourage all PT and PTA programs to join the 192 schools that have already raised over $2.7 million for physical therapy research to participate in this year's effort. All contributions to the Challenge are used by the Foundation to award a research grant and a Promotion of Doctoral Studies Scholarship (PODS) to deserving researchers.
