Barbara Sargent, PT, PhD, PCS, was awarded a Promotion of Doctoral Studies (PODS) I scholarship in 2010 and a PODS II scholarship in 2011. Linda Fetters, PT, PhD, FAPTA, was awarded Doctoral Training Research Grants (DTRG) in 1981 and 1990. Sargent's contributions to this research were supported in part by the Foundation.
“Improvements in Hip Muscle Performance Result in Increased Use of the Hip Extensors and Abductors During a Landing Task,” by Stearns KM and Powers CM, was published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine (2014;42:602–609). Kristen M. Stearns, PT, PhD, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 2008 and a PODS II scholarship in 2009. Christopher M. Powers, PT, PhD, FAPTA, was awarded a DTRG in 1993 and a Marquette Challenge Research Grant in 2001.
“Comparison of Twice Refocused Spin Echo Versus Stimulated Echo Diffusion Tensor Imaging for Tracking Muscle Fibers,” by Noehren B, Andersen A, Feiweier T, Damon B, and Hardy P, was published online in the Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging on February 19, 2014. Brian Noehren, PT, MSPT, PhD, was awarded PODS I scholarships in 2006 and 2007 and a PODS II scholarship in 2008.
“Translating Using RE-AIM of a Falls Behavior Change Program Among an Assisted Living Population,” by Mielenz TJ, Jia H, Seefeld E, Schulingkamp M, Smith S, Dam T, Rogers K, and Alvarez KJ, was published in Family & Community Health (2014;37:147–154). Thelma J. Mielenz, PT, PhD, OCS, was awarded a New Investigator Fellowship Training Initiative (NIFTI) in 2003.
“Intensive, Progressive Exercise Improves Quality of Life Following Lumbar Microdiskectomy: A Randomized Controlled Trial,” by Beneck GJ, Popovich JM Jr, Selkowitz DM, Azen S, Kulig K; on behalf of Physical Therapy Clinical Research Network (PTClinResNet), was published online in Clinical Rehabilitation on March 14, 2014. George J. Beneck, PT, PhD, OCS, was awarded PODS I scholarships in 2006 and 2007 and a PODS II scholarship in 2008. John M. Popovich Jr, PT, PhD, was awarded PODS I scholarships in 2005 and 2007 and a PODS II scholarship in 2008.
“Disturbances of Motor Unit Rate Modulation Are Prevalent in Muscles of Spastic-Paretic Stroke Survivors,” by Mottram CJ, Heckman CJ, Powers RK, Rymer WZ, and Suresh NL, was published in the Journal of Neurophysiology (2014;111:2017–2028). Carol J. Mottram, PT, PhD, was awarded a PODS II scholarship in 2003.
“Plantarflexor Weakness Negatively Impacts Walking in Persons With Multiple Sclerosis More Than Plantarflexor Spasticity,” by Wagner JM, Kremer TR, Van Dillen LR, and Naismith RT, was published in Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (2014;95:1358–1365). Joanne M. Wagner, PT, PhD, was awarded PODS II scholarships in 2004 and 2005. Linda R. Van Dillen, PT, PhD, was awarded a DTRG in 1992.
“Inflammatory Genes and Psychological Factors Predict Induced Shoulder Pain Phenotype,” by George SZ, Parr JJ, Wallace MR, Wu SS, Borsa PA, Dai Y, and Fillingim RB, was published online in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise on March 4, 2014. Steven Z. George, PT, PhD, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 2000 and a PODS II scholarship in 2001.

“High Bone Density Masks Architectural Deficiencies in an Individual With Spinal Cord Injury,” by Dudley-Javoroski S, Amelon R, Liu Y, Saha PK, and Shields RK, was published in The Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine (2014;37:349–354). Shauna Dudley-Javoroski, PT, PhD, was awarded a Mary McMillan Doctoral Scholarship in 2003, PODS I scholarships in 2005 and 2006, and a PODS II scholarship in 2008. Richard K. Special Funding Announcement from NICHD
The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) recently released a Notice of Intent to Publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement for Medical Rehabilitation Research Resource (R24). This R24 intends to support a national network of research infrastructure in medical rehabilitation. An expected application due date will be Winter 2014. National Student Conclave marks the official kickoff for the 2014–2015 Miami–Marquette Challenge. Students at PT and PTA schools across the country are asked to “Get on The List” to help support the Foundation's mission of funding physical therapy research.

Rebecca Craik, PT, PhD, FAPTA (1981 DTRG), was recently named dean of the College of Health Sciences at Arcadia University.
Katrina Maluf, PT, PhD (2000 PODS I, 2001 PODS II, 2007 Magistro, Family Research Grant) joined the faculty at San Diego State University.
Philip McClure, PT, PhD, FAPTA (1993 and 1994 DTRG, 1999 Orthopaedic Research Grant), was recently named as chair of Arcadia University's Department of Physical Therapy.
Daniel Riddle, PT, PhD, FAPTA (1990 DTRG), was recently featured on multiple news sites including CNN Health and Fox News for his research suggesting that one third of knee replacements in the United States may be inappropriate.
William Thompson, PT, DPT, PhD (2007 Kendall Scholarship, 2009, and 2010 PODS II) completed a postdoctoral fellowship at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in August and is now on faculty at Indiana University.
Stacey DeJong, PT, PhD, PCS (2007 Kendall Scholarship, 2008 PODS I, 2010 PODS II, 2012 NIFTI), joined the faculty of the University of Iowa's Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science in March 2014 as an assistant professor and director of the Applied Neuroplasticity Laboratory.
