“Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training in Infants With Congenital Heart Disease and Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation: A Case Report,” by Smith BK, Bleiweis MS, Neel CR, and Martin AD, was published online ahead of print in Physical Therapy (PTJ) on March 30, 2012. Barbara K. Smith, PT, PhD, was awarded a Promotion of Doctoral Studies (PODS) I scholarship in 2008 and a PODS II scholarship in 2009. Smith's contribution to this research was supported in part by the Foundation.
“Minimally Invasive Total Knee Arthroplasty Improves Early Knee Strength But Not Functional Performance: A Randomized Controlled Trial,” by Stevens-Lapsley JE, Bade MJ, Shulman BC, Kohrt WM, and Dayton MR, was published online in the Journal of Arthroplasty on March 27, 2012. Jennifer E. Stevens-Lapsley, PT, MPT, PhD, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 2000, a PODS II scholarship in 2001, and a Pittsburgh–Marquette Challenge Research Grant in 2007. Michael J. Bade, PT, MPT, FAAOMPT, was awarded a Florence P. Kendall Scholarship in 2008, a PODS I scholarship in 2010, and a PODS II scholarship in 2011. Bade's contribution to this research was supported in part by the Foundation.
“Low Back Pain,” a practice guideline by Delitto A, George SZ, Van Dillen LR, Whitman JM, Sowa G, Shekelle P, Denninger TR, and Godges JJ, was published in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy (2012;42:A1–A57). Steven Z. George, PT, PhD, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 2000 and a PODS II scholarship in 2001. Linda R. Van Dillen, PT, PhD, was awarded a Doctoral Training Research Grant in 1992 and served on the Foundation's Scientific Review Committee (SRC).
“Low Back Pain: Do the Right Thing and Do It Now,” an editorial by Childs JD, Flynn TW, and Wainner RS, was published in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy (2012;42:296–299). John D. Childs, PT, PhD, MBA, OCS, CSCS, FAAOMPT, was awarded a PODS I scholarship in 2001 and a Pittsburgh–Marquette Challenge Research Grant in 2004. Timothy W. Flynn, PT, PhD, OCS, FAAOMPT, was awarded a Doctoral Training Research Grant in 1996 and an Orthopaedic Section Research Grant in 2000.
“Comparative Study of Short Forms of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia: Fear of Movement in a Surgical Spine Population,” by Archer KR, Phelps KD, Seebach C, Song Y, Riley LH III, and Wegener ST, was published online in Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation on April 2, 2012. Kristin R. Archer, PT, DPT, PhD, was awarded a Magistro Family Foundation Research Grant in 2011.
“Implementation Challenges and Functional Outcome Predictors for Elder Community-Based Disability Prevention Programs,” by Dossa A and Capitman JA, was published online in the Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy on April 3, 2012. Almas Dossa, PT, MSPT, PhD, MPH, was awarded a Mary McMillan Doctoral Scholarship in 2000, a PODS I scholarship in 2000, and a PODS II scholarship in 2004.
“Construct Validity of the Health Science Reasoning Test,“ by Huhn K, Black L, Jensen GM, and Deutsch JE, was published in the Journal of Allied Health (2011;40:181–186). Karen Huhn, PT, PhD, MS, was awarded a PODS II scholarship in 2008.
“Community-Based Exercise and Wellness Program for People Diagnosed With Parkinson Disease: Experiences From a 10-Month Trial,” by Steffen T, Petersen C, and Dvorak L, was published online in the Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy on March 28, 2012. Teresa Steffen, PT, PhD, was awarded a Doctoral Training Research Grant in 1990.
“Rehabilitation Interventions for Pain and Disability in Osteoarthritis: A Review of Interventions Including Exercise, Manual Techniques, and Assistive Devices,” by Maura D. Iversen, PT, DPT, ScD, MPH, was published in Orthopaedic Nursing (2012;31:103–108). Iversen was awarded a Foundation Research Grant in 2000.
Foundation Alumni Honored by Neurology Section
Lynn Snyder-Mackler, PT, ScD, ATC, SCS, FAPTA, 2-time Foundation Doctoral Training Research Grant recipient, prior SRC member, and mentor to many Foundation alumni, was recently recognized with a Method to Extend Research in Time (MERIT) Award from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Snyder-Mackler, Alumni Distinguished Professor of Physical Therapy at the University of Delaware, will receive up to 10 years of funding for her research focusing on the development of evidence-based approaches to the rehabilitation of knee injuries. Current Funding Opportunities
The Foundation is now accepting applications for the Kendall Scholarship and Research Grant programs. Students beginning their postprofessional doctoral programs are encouraged to apply for a $5,000 Kendall Scholarship. Foundation Research Grants are available for either 1- or 2-year projects for new and emerging investigators. Please note: the application requirements and structures for both opportunities have been updated. Be sure to review “Guidelines and Instructions” carefully before beginning an application. PT 2012 Legacy Gala
