Our study was an initial attempt to examine the validity of the Peabody Developmental Gross Motor Scale (PDMS-GM) when used as an evaluative measure for infants receiving physical therapy. William Boyce has identified limitations of the study and provided some excellent suggestions for improving research methods. We appreciate his constructive comments and agree that further research is necessary to determine the responsiveness of the PDMS-GM. Our perspective and rationale differ from Boyce's on some of the issues.
Boyce discusses the need to administer an evaluative measure of known validity (“gold standard”) to examine whether change on the PDMS-GM reflects the acquisition of new motor abilities and not measurement error. We agree that this distinction is essential for both practice and research. Unfortunately, except for children with cerebral palsy, standardized evaluative measures have not been validated.…
